Promoting Your Senior’s Sexuality

Maintaining sexuality and intimacy is important for seniors' overall well-being, no matter where they may be living, who they may be living with, and regardless of their gender and cognitive function. Here are several ways to help seniors maintain their sexuality:

Education and Communication

It’s important for seniors to be provided with education on sexual health and changes that occur with aging. It’s equally important to encourage open communication between partners about desires, boundaries, and any concerns.

Healthcare Support

Regular check-ups with healthcare providers is essential for sexually active seniors to address any physical or mental health issues that may affect sexual health. There should be a discussion of options like hormone therapy, medications, vaginal lubricants, or other treatments if necessary.

Emotional and Psychological Support

There should be a plan for relevant interventions addressing  emotional issues such as stress, anxiety, or depression that can impact sexual desire. Counseling or therapy if needed, particularly for those dealing with loss or changes in relationships, should be offered and encouraged.

Physical Fitness and Healthy Lifestyle

Encouraging regular physical activity to improve energy levels and body image can promote a healthy sexuality.  In addition, promoting  a healthy diet and adequate sleep is also essential to maintain overall health.

Intimacy Beyond Sex

Fostering intimacy through non-sexual physical affection, such as hugging, kissing, and holding hands is a great way to promote the sexuality of seniors. Providing privacy and non-judgmental access to such activity is imperative.

Encouraging activities that build emotional closeness, like spending quality time together and engaging in shared hobbies can promote a healthy relationship for seniors.

Adaptations and Aids

Using lubricants or other products to address physical discomforts during sex is an important conversation. That conversation should include the exploration of different sexual positions or aids that can make sexual activity more comfortable… and satisfying.

Privacy and Environment

Ensuring that seniors have a private and comfortable space for intimacy is critical. Respecting their need for privacy, especially in communal living settings is of the utmost importance as is for family and staff to be 100% non-judgmental.

Social and Peer Support

Seniors should be encouraged to participate in support groups or social activities where seniors can discuss their experiences and concerns. Participation in such groups should be made accessible.

By addressing these areas, seniors can maintain a fulfilling sexual life that contributes to their overall happiness and health.
